bliss: noun. perfect happiness; great joy.
When you hear the phrase, “Follow your bliss”, what images come to mind? Dropping everything and jet setting off to another country? Leaving behind your day job to start your own company? Living a life of luxury on a white, sandy beach? If this is where your mind goes when you hear “Follow your bliss”, it’s probably followed very quickly by the thought, “Yeah, right. Maybe if I were a millionaire!”
Too often in our society we associate being happy and embracing bliss with having excessive material resources at our disposal. We disqualify ourselves if we don’t have the money to take an extravagant vacation, or even a full day off work spent at home, thinking we just have to tough it out and let others who are more fortunate “follow their bliss” while we barely make it through.
If this has been your mindset, I have good news - it just isn't true! There are actually plenty of small ways to follow your bliss in everyday life that don’t require a hit to your bank account or a disruption to your schedule. You just have to learn to notice them, and take advantage when you do. Here are four practical ideas to help you follow your bliss in your everyday life:
Speak words of kindness to a stranger. Sometime during your day, maybe in line at the supermarket or stopping in at the post office, catch the eye of a stranger, smile, and speak some kind words. “I love your earrings!” “Your hair looks beautiful today.” “You have such a nice smile!” It’s quick, it’s free, and the smile on the other person’s face will light you up with joy, guaranteed.
Do something you’ve been wanting to do but have been too afraid to do. It doesn’t have to be something huge like skydiving. (Unless that’s your thing, and then by all means, go for it!) For me, today, it was as simple as posting a selfie so I could show friends a new lipstick I really like. I debated back and forth forever, trying different angles and deciding all of them looked “weird”. I even contemplated just taking a picture of the lipstick lying on the table by itself. But I finally decided I needed to get over myself, let go of my insecurities, and just share. And you know what? I’m glad I did! Maybe for you it will be wearing a bright new color you love but think is “too bold” for you. Or even sitting down at your laptop to start the book that’s been in the back of your mind for years. Whatever it is, you can do it!

- Change up your routine. Do you eat the same thing for breakfast every day? Always wear the same hairstyle? Stick to the same pair of shoes for work no matter what? You could be missing out on an opportunity to follow your bliss! Research shows that having new experiences actually releases dopamine (aka the happiness hormone) in the brain. It’s great to have traditions and tried and true favorites, but sometimes we stick to the familiar more out of habit than desire, and we can miss out on fun new experiences right under our noses. Look for one thing in your routine this week that’s feeling a little stale, and make a change. You might just find a new favorite!
- Meditate on one positive affirmation every day this week. At Be Pure Beauty, we believe our thoughts and words about ourselves have a powerful effect on our mood and mindset. What you think and say about yourself is your reality - so take inventory of your self-talk (both internal and external) this week, and make an effort to be kind to yourself. A good rule of thumb to follow is: “Would I say this to/about my best friend?” If the answer is no, then don’t say it to or about yourself. You are beautiful, and you deserve kindness both from others and from yourself. If you need help in this area, talk to a trusted friend or seek out a counselor to help you change your self-talk. You are worth it!
So, beauties, which of these tips will you try this week as you seek to follow your bliss? How are you already following your bliss in your own life? We’d love to hear in the comments below!
