Clean Beauty Swap

Time for a brand recap, swap and a pattern I have documented time and again of the journey I took on my own and heard from clients about when they go "clean" with their wellness.

We clean up our eating, we clean out our toxic cleaning chemicals, but we don't ditch the toxic cosmetics. It's like we are addicts to brands and to the story that our Dior Show or Tom Ford makes us more beautiful and more important, or we believe we will find nothing better. Truth be told, five years ago I wanted nothing but green beauty, but all I could find was Bare Minerals. When I wanted to step up my game, there was nothing I could find for the coverage I wanted. I marched into Sephora and went for the "makeup artists brand," Makeup Forever. I rationalized - "This is just one product; it can't bother me that much." Many of us do the same.

Fast forward to this week, and I am sharing this story with co-founder of NuEvolution makeup, Sandra. She said "What did it do? Break you out?" Nope, worse. It was sneakier than that for me. I didn't notice it until I had worn it for about a week.

I bought it just before heading on a trip to Paris, and each morning when I would go to put it on, my nose would begin to run, and I would feel stuffy and light headed. I thought it was potentially the climate shift or being in the city. So I continued to wear the foundation from Makeup Forever. I was in France for a month, so I had plenty of time to figure this out. After the first week, I began to develop a rash of small dermatitis bumps around my nose. I used more makeup to cover this, as it looked like I had a cold. I continued to believe that it was just the environment and hoped I would feel better - until I got home from my trip and wore it for an additional three weeks before I finally decided to wear my BareMinerals until the rash cleared up. Sure enough, within a week the rash subsided and the post nasal drip stopped.

So for one more test I had a special evening out, put the makeup on and once again my nose started running and dripping. I had half of my makeup on, but I went ahead and washed my face and started over with BareMinerals.

I was so frustrated by this. "It's one lousy product! How could it be so bad for me?" I rationalized. However, the proof was in the health effects it had on me. Worse yet, all that time I had my little two year old cheek to cheek with me, kisses and hugs. There were times I would stop her from getting to my face because I didn't want her to ingest what I had on my skin! (Seriously, I know how ridiculous this sounds now.)

Here is the ingredient breakdown for Makeup For Ever HD Foundation - Cyclopentasiloxane, Aqua (Water), PEG-10 Dimethicone, Neopentyl Glycol Diethlhexanoate, Talc, Mica, Phenyl Trimethicone, Sodium Chloride, Lauroyl Lysine, Dimenthicone Crosspolymer, Methylpropanediol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Propanediol, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Sucrose Palmitate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate, Alumina, Cyclohexasiloxane, Proplene Carbonate, Pentylene Glycol, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Evodia Rutaecarpa Fruit Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glyceryl Linoleate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Glyercin, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tin Oxide, BHT, Tocopherol [ /- CI 19140 (Yellow, Yellow 5 Lake), CI 42090 (Blue 1 Lake), CI 77007 (Ultramarine), CI 77163 (Bismuth Oxychloride), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77891 (Titanium Oxide)].

-Of the above ingredients - (serious chemistry friends) I wouldn't even be able to identify which one/ones were actually causing the issue, because so many of them have negative health impacts.

Compared with the ingredient breakdown for NuEvolution Complete Coverage Foundation:

Water/Aqua, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Glycerin 8043-29-6, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Carnauba Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Origanum Vulgare (Oregano) Leaf Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Bark Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) Root Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E). May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI-77891), Mica (CI-77019), Iron Oxides (CI-77491), (CI-77492), (CI-77499).

Many women who want to wear clean beauty but feel like they have no great alternatives often do as I did - resort to the easiest option, even if it impacts our health in a negative way. We tell ourselves it's just one product, but on a micro biome level that one product could be wreaking havoc with our body.

In 2011, things were still a bit bleak in the green beauty world on the end of quality high coverage foundations and makeup artist-quality colors, so I get it. However, in 2017 we are fully stacked with fabulous options from full coverage by NuEvolution (coming soon to Be Pure Beauty!) or, better than BareMinerals, Alima Pure loose powders.

Right now if you are reading this and are still hanging onto your old "dirty" makeup products because you are a glam girl, make the swap to NuEvolution. They are amazing, with organic and natural ingredients, formulated with high-impact colors and full coverage. Sandra and I talked about all of the ways our health has been impacted negatively by the choices we made that were simply because we thought we had no other option, and how we see the difference in choosing the safest after doing a little extra research.

Nadine and Sandra are Wonder Women in my book, for making the leap of faith while other women were out there looking for clean makeup that would hold its own on the runway and on fashion-conscious mamas like me. Not to mention that since Indie Beauty Expo NYC at the end of August, I have had two hour-long heart to heart conversations with Sandra, who is the real deal: a hard-working, beauty industry butt-kicking, fierce health warrior mama of two. She was literally packing your orders while on the phone with me. I LOVE that! Nadine and Sandra believe in a better world with ingredients that care for their clients.

I share this with you to inspire change and let you live a more whole, healthy life.

xo,
